2d3d Group - where creativity meets logic

From a 2 dimensional plan comes a 3 dimensional form. The 2d3d Group is a collection of radically designed tables, all of which unfurl for a visual fiesta of geometric precision.

Admired for their intricate form, their precise engineering and their efficient use of materials, the 2d3d Group is appreciated by those who find beauty in function and oppose design for the sake of design.

MORE FROM LESS
Environmental Design is on the agenda at Formtank as we seek a more sustainable approach to design. 2d3d Group attempts to produce "more from less" through a simple proposition; utilise a sheet of steel in the most efficient way. Each table has been reverse designed from the steel industry's standard sheet size in order to maximize yield and minimize waste. This radical approach limits waste steel to less than 4% overall. Moreover the intricate forms create the illusion of more material than there actually is, on average the steel base represents just one third of steel and glass combined.

ROOTED IN TRIANGLES: THE 2D3D DEVELOPMENT

The development of 2d3d has been long and extensive, requiring complex mathematics and precision engineering. The outcome is visually sophisticated, while on closer inspection the structure reveals itself. "It's all about triangles" The designer George Rice explains, "the remarkable strength and stability relies on four triangles which can been seen in the cross section.

These work together creating the rigidity, and allowing us to use relatively thin plate. The outcome is totally unique and the glass top acts like a picture frame, bringing the whole piece together as an angular feast for the eyes".

"...an engineering coup and a structural tour de force"
